BOIS BLANC ISLAND SUMMER 2024
A Mother-Son Adventure on Bois Blanc Island: Exploring the Hidden Gem in the Straits of Mackinac and Childhood Nostalgia.
When my son and I decided to take a trip Michigan to visit family we decided to set aside two weeks to explore Bois Blanc Island. A family Heirloom. My great grandparents bought property on the Island in 1940. A beautiful lot on the untouched "Snow Beach". Nestled in the Straits of Mackinac, just off the coast of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Bois Blanc is a place that feels almost untouched by time. Far from the crowds of nearby Mackinac Island, Bois Blanc is an unspoiled escape into nature, and a perfect setting for a summer get-away that I look forward to every year.
My Parents built a Log home in the woods back in 2007. We love spending time here during the summer. It's a true escape from reality. Other than the occasional rattle snake or the biting black flies it's worth every bite.
To get to Bois Blanc, we took a ferry from Cheboygan, Michigan, which offered a scenic ride across the Straits of Mackinac. The cool breeze off the water and the stunning views of Lake Huron made the journey feel like part of my childhood. I dream of my son having the experiences I had as a child. I know most grown adults have mixed feeling on their childhoods, but mine was great. My cousins Sophia and Chloe were more like my sisters growing up. I have so many memories running around on the island stepping on the rough limestone rocks barefoot and free.
